Introduction

Styrene and phenol are reacted in a controlled way to prepare styrenated phenol. Because of presence of a number of aromatic rings, it is a highly effective antioxidant for rubbers. The reaction conditions are controlled very well so that the resulting product is pale yellow in colour and can be used even in light coloured rubber applications such as surgical gloves. It is a effective even at a low dosage. The low dosage and overall low cost make it a cost effective antioxidant.
